It’s publication day for Bettie Page Presents: The Librarian!
While interviewing burlesque dancers all across the country for my first novel, Blue Angel, one name came up again and again: Bettie Page. Of course, I knew of Bettie Page, and always thought of her as the thinking woman’s sex symbol. I just never realized how many women were actually thinking about her! I began researching Bettie, and realized that Bettie personified the edgy sexuality that we’re now seeing go mainstream. She explored BDSM in her art at a time it was mainly consumed by men, yet she still managed to own it and make it empowering. She is the perfect icon for the transition to this Fifty Shades moment in popular culture, in which BDSM imagery and literature is now being consumed by ordinary women.
I thought it would be fitting for her to be part of this cultural moment in books, and was inspired to write my own tribute to her legacy – a story about one woman’s self-discovery and sexual awakening, a journey guided by – what else? – the iconic images of Bettie Page. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to connect with the wonderful and like minded folks who manage Bettie Page’s legacy, and the result is the novel Bettie Page Presents: The Librarian.
